Track Coach
With a coaching career that spanned some 50 years, there is no track athlete whose training method does not owe something to Harry Coates. Harry coached Seton Hall Prep to seven consecutive national prep school championships. Under the tutelage of Coates,who was dubbed "the wonder man" by the Newark Ledger, individual runners and relay teams would regularly bring home Penn Relay and Millrose game titles.

While at Seton Hall University he coached future Olympians, John Gibson, Mel Dalton, Frank Zuna (the 1921 Boston Marathon winner), Walter Gegan, Al Hulsebosh, and Bernie McCafferty. Harry also went on to coach at Villanova and Providence College. He is a member of the Seton Hall University and Seton Hall Prep, Halls of Fame. He was enshrined in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1954.
